Symbol:Ca Group #:2 (II A) Group Name:Alkaline Earth Metals Atomic #:20 Mass #:40.08 Atomic Mass:40.078 Electron Configuration:1s22s22p63s23p64s2 Physical Properties: Bpt:1484 °C (2,703 °F) Mpt:839 °C (1,542 °F) Density:1.55g/ml (1.55g per cubic centimeter at 20 °C)( at 20 °C/293K) Radioactivity:None Color:Silverish-white Odor:Metallic odor Hardness:Fairly hard Brittle:None Malleability:Medium Chemical Properties: (Click here for Demonstrations!! ) Calcium forms a white coatingof nitride in the air. Calcium, like all other alkaline earth metals reacts moderately in water. When calcium reacts with water it forms calcium oxide. Calcium reacts highly in acid. Also, when calcium is burned it burns with a yellow-red flame, forming largely the nitride. Calcium reacts readily with oxygen. When calcium is expposed to moist air the surface becomes coated with calcium hydroxide, carbonate, and oxide. History: Calcium was discoverd by Sir Humphry Davy. Calcium was firts found purely in 1808. But Ancient Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians knew about calcium compounds and used it to make mortar. Calcium occurs naturally in limestone, gypsum, and flourite. The element calcium is found in bones, teeth, eggshells, and in the shells of creatures like oysters and clams.Osteoporosis is a disease in which the bones are deprived of calcium. Normal bones consist of a series of thin, intersecting plates. These plates are surrounded by a dense shell. In osteoporosis, the plates are filled with holes, or they dissappear. Osteoporosis takes years to develop, there are no warning signs of this disease. Osteoporosis can result from other diseases such as local injury or inflammation, hormonal diseases, and lack of physical activity, as well as natuarl loss of bones that occurs as a person gets older. Uses: Their are many uses for the element calcium. Calcium is the 5th most common element of all the elements in the earth's crust. Calcium is made up of about 3.4% of the earth's crust. Some uses of calcium are fertilizers, calcium is used to make metallergic and electronic materials. Calcium is also used as a deoxidizer in the refining of steel, iron, copper, and alloys of copper. It is also used for extracting certain metals from their ores. Calcium hydroxide is used in the process of making lime. It is also used in making antacids that buffer the pH of the soil in gardening.

The boiling point of calcium is 1484 C The melting point of calcium is 839.2 C Number of electrons: 20 Number of isotopes: 14 Number of protons: 20 Discovered by Sir Humphrey Forms more than 3% of the earth’s crust. Can be found in leaves, bones, teeth, and shells Calcium is a metal, which is kind of hard Calcium reacts with water It burns with a yellow-red flame
