Its normal phase is a solid, the melting point of Calcium is 1548°F, but the boiling point is 2703°F. The web site is a place to find some calcium for sale. (its pretty expensive)

Here is a fun fact about Sir Humphrey Davy, he once took some nitrous oxide, (which now days is now known as laughing gas) and breathed 16 QUARTS of the gas in seven full minutes and became completely intoxicated with the gas. There is something for your project.

I think it was maybe discovered in Rome, they used lime (which contains calcium). They knew there was something in the limestone but I don't think they named it.
