Compounds in which it is commonly found?

There are no chemical compounds of helium because helium doesn't react with any other element.

But helium is contained in some minerals such as cleveite (a radioactive mineral containing uranium) or in natural gas (contains 7% of helium).

what was William Ramsay doing when he discovered helium

He obtained helium by reaction of mineral cleveite (a radioactive mineral containing uranium) with acid.

The first person who find helium was Pierre Janssen. He noticed a new element when he observed the Sun in 1868. He just noticed a new element but he couldn't be able to produced it. The first person who produced helium on Earth was Sir William Ramsay (and independently N. A. Langlet and P. T. Cleve) in 1895.
